Alternatives To Waste (ATW) was organized in Santa Rosa, CA in 1994. The principals, Alan Milner and James Upshaw are also principals in Safety Quick, LLC. The firm was established to develop products and services designed to increase public and commercial participation in community recycling and waste diversion activities. The company’s principals have extensive experience in the development and implementation of recycling programs, as well as public education and media relations, presentation skills and product development and marketing.
Mr. Milner has been involved in the environmental industry for over 25 years. Prior to founding ATW, he had is own consulting business specializing in resource recovery and environmental education programs and products. In 1978, he designed and produced the first stacking household recycling containers for a pilot curbside collection program for the City of Santa Rosa, CA. Alan received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Communications from UCLA in 1957.
Mr. Upshaw has been involved with Management Tools, Inc., a Southern California based consulting firm, specializing in the design and implementation of performance management, quality improvement and customer service enhancement systems. He has consulted in both public and private industries, from municipal water and power departments, to manufacturing, mining, timber and recreational companies. Jim graduated cum laude from San Francisco State University in 1976.
