Flower Status Report 2-1-2006
The daffodils have definitely grown over the past ten days.
To keep you up-to-date on the status of the flowers, we'll be putting
recent photos and notes on this website. Check back each week.
Larry, our chief gardener and all-around good guy says that there have been 32 tons of daffodils planted at Ironstone. 2 tons of those are new this year. That's about 528,000 bulbs. Some of those bulbs have divided and divided, and a few have been lost, so who knows how many total bulbs are out there? In addition, there are 1,000s of hyacinths, crocus and Dutch iris.
In the past week, we've had days of rain and drizzle split by days of sun. At higher altitudes, usually over 3,000', there's been snow. Since Ironstone is at 2,200', we haven't seen more than a flake of snow this year. A few days have been noted by fog in the Central Valley and those days tend to be bright and sunny in Murphys! Come on up out of the fog!
Back to the flowers: most of the beds have green growth 6" to 12" in height: so much to come!

Looking toward the waterwheel, the bulbs show a bit of color at some tips.
The miner's cabin shows clumps of the first daffodils coming through.
Barrels at the front of the main entrance are in full bloom.
The guard station has nice yellow annuals.
Typical of the clumps of daffodils are these about 12" high. Note the slight indication of color in the tips of a few plants.
More annuals around the Ironstone entry sign.
This slope across from the entry to Ironstone really shows the clumps of daffodils coming up. They will be spectacular when in full bloom!
Looking north from the winery, the grape vines still await their pruning.
Christian, Michael and Joan are our export sales team. Their current guess is that the flowers will
be at maximum on March 14, 2006.
